In most workplaces, salaries are a carefully or poorly guarded secret, depending on how Darwinian the management is. In the case of many federal workers, salaries are public knowledge.
The Ashbury Park Press, a Gannett newspaper based in New Jersey, keeps a database of federal worker salaries. The latest set is from 2006 and doesn’t include some categories of workers, such as those in sensitive positions.
