About

It’s astonishing, in a way, that the Declaration that defined our nation should say in the first few sentences that all people have a right to pursue happiness. There were plenty of other rights that could have been listed, like the right to own property, to representation without taxation, and so on, but Thomas Jefferson zeroed in on the right to find happiness. For a bunch of revolutionaries, the people who founded our nation were pragmatists, so what’s so pragmatic about trying to be happy? Plenty, of course. An nation working every day to make life better will be a stronger nation tomorrow. And what does this have to do with the personal finances of government workers? Well, a government can be no stronger than the people serving in it, and stable and secure finances can be a source of your strength, and, of course, your happiness.

A bit about myself: by day I’m a research scientist … and by night an unpaid financial planner. Not exactly what most kids grow up aspiring to do, but my wife and family appreciate it when April 15th rolls around.
